Stephen Finlay (30 November 1956 – 14 February 2004) was an English actor, writer and artist. He trained as an artist at the Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts and then as an actor at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London. He is the son of actor Frank Finlay.
Professor Finlay’s research is focused on metaethics and ethics, especially the nature of normativity, practical reasoning, moral psychology, and the semantic and metaphysical foundations of ethics.

Stephen Finlay argues that they can, advancing a new theory of the meaning of this language and providing pragmatic explanations of the specially problematic features of its moral and deliberative uses which comprise the puzzles of metaethics.
Four different faces of ‘moral realism’ are distinguished: semantic, ontological, metaphysical and normative. The debate is presented as taking shape under dialectical pressure from the demands of (i) capturing the moral appearances; and (ii) reconciling morality with our understanding of the mind and world.
