To me, "a previous engagement" means "a thing which I was previously engaged in doing, but have now finished", whereas "a prior engagement" means "a thing which I have already planned to do, which conflicts with what I am being asked to do".
16 de jun. de 2009 · #1. "I can't make it because of (prior/previous) engagements." To me they sound both grammatically correct. I usually use "previous" in such instances, but I heard also "prior" used fairly often. Any specific instance in which using one instead of another is preferable?

26 de ene. de 2011 · Previous engagement is more correct. In this context, it refers to a specific time of promise: a promise to be at a particular place at a particular time. Promise is a general commitment made by someone. You can promise not to eat someone else's lunch, for example, but you wouldn't refer to that kind of promise as previous engagement.
