The band formed in 1988 with Lief Sørbye (mandolin, vocals), Adolfo Lazo (drums), Rob Wullenjohn , and Mark Showalter (bass). The band has seen a changing cast of musicians, with Sørbye and Lazo being the only two constant members throughout the duration of the band's existence.
Hailing from Oslo, Norway, founding member and lead singer/electric mandolinist, Lief Sorbye, is recognized as a driving force in the modern folk-rock movement. He started Tempest after years of touring and recording on the folk circuit.

Lief Sorbye is a native of Norway, now living in California. He is best known for his work with the band “Golden Bough”, extensively touring and recording on both sides of the Atlantic.
Tempest performs one of Lief Sorbye's compositions followed by a traditional Scottish tune at the 2011 Scottish Highlander Festival in Kelso Washington.
