He co-founded the Go-Betweens (1977–89, 2000–06) with Robert Forster in Brisbane in 1977 and issued four solo albums: Watershed (1991), Fireboy (1992), Horsebreaker Star (1994) and In Your Bright Ray (1997).

McLennan reportedly went through a heroin phase and had trouble sustaining relationships with women; his melodic grace concealed a dark thematic undertow.

It brought an end to a band he’d formed with Robert Forster in 1978, but more importantly permanently severed a partnership which had survived penury, rivalry, a decade apart, and a reunion which flourished as if reborn.

He was 48 years old. This is a remembrance. Grant and I started the Brisbane band The Go-Betweens in January 1978.
