Nació en Sakai, pero pasó la mayor parte de su infancia en la ciudad natal de su padre, Imabari, en la Prefectura de Ehime de Japón. De adolescente no había pensado en ser arquitecto, pero tuvo ocasión de conocer la obra de Le Corbusier , que le impresionó y le llevó a la determinación de ser arquitecto.
