The United States Navy Sea, Air, and Land ( SEAL) Teams, commonly known as Navy SEALs, are the U.S. Navy 's primary special operations force and a component of the Naval Special Warfare Command.

In 1978, the silver SEAL insignia was abolished, with the Special Warfare insignia being issued solely in gold thereafter. The SEAL insignia is therefore unusual in the Navy, in that it is one of the very few breast insignia issued identically for both officers and enlisted personnel.
