Sir John is widely accepted as being the progenitor of Clan Lyon, a claim verified by renowned historian Sir Iain Moncreiffe of that Ilk.

On 2 July 1820, the Earl and Mary Milner were married at St. George's, Hanover Square. A notice of this wedding appeared in The Times on 3 July 1820.
