Rashid Rida was a Syrian scholar of Islam who early on became a follower of the salafi school and, with his mentor Muhammad 'Abduh, edited the Arabic monthly al-Manar in Cairo. While his early activism was related to educational reform on the salafi model, by 1913 he had begun organizing against the Ottoman government.
