Down Terrace is a real benchmark in British cinema - a gangster film that is not nonsensical Essex based mockney mush, a film completely indebted to subtlety and soap opera indifference. There's this air of Brookside meets Mike Leigh about it. This really is different and that has to be applauded without hesitation.
