The events of 2020—from the death of George Floyd at the hands of an officer of the Minneapolis Police Department, to the systemic torture of protesters in Belarus, to the deaths of individuals detained during lockdowns in India and Kenya—provide stark reminders that the state’s use of force, if left unchecked, can easily turn to brutality.
In contrast, only 56 law enforcement officers were (directly) killed in the line of duty. 46 by gunfire. 10 by vehicular assault. Now compare that to the UK, where 3 people were killed by police fatal shootings and 23 deaths were in or following police custody (hard to quantify how many of those deaths were directly related to police violence.)
