From Lourens to Lawrence. The Friesland-born Alma Tadema settled in London in 1870. He was a beloved member of the British society, assumed English nationality and was even knighted. Lourens Alma Tadema, conocido como Lawrence Alma-Tadema (Dronryp, 8 de enero de 1836-Wiesbaden, 25 de junio de 1912), fue un pintor neerlandés neoclasicista de la época victoriana, formado en Bélgica y afincado en Inglaterra desde 1870. Es conocido por sus suntuosos cuadros inspirados en el mundo antiguo.
Anna was the younger daughter of Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, and his first wife who died in 1869. She was brought up in London by Tadema, and his second wife Laura, whose marriage was childless. Both Anna, and her elder sister seem to have retained into adult life, the timidity shown in the picture their father painted of them in childhood (This is our corner, Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam).
