Arthur Hughes is one of Britain’s most promising young actors. He was the first disabled actor to play the role of Richard III on stage at the Royal Shakespeare Company, and now he’s the lead in the new Disney+ show Shardlake. Born in 1992, Hughes knew he wanted to be an actor from an early age. “I enjoy the sound of my voice,” he jokes.

Although the Millais version is more dramatic and famous, I find the Hughes painting evokes genuine pathos with its subtle, refined, twilight atmosphere.
