After the untimely death of her father, Riazuddin Ahmad, in 1950, it was Riaz's mother who took over the role of provider for her family. She provided financial stability and a learning environment at home for her daughters.

Riaz has travelled widely and lectured at universities and cultural forums in England and the USA. She was given the Himmett-Hellman award by Human Rights Watch, New York, in 1997 and the Al-Muftah Award in Karachi in 2005. Fahmida Riaz died on November 21, 2018 at the age 72.
