«In God we trust» (en español: «En Dios confiamos») es el lema oficial de Estados Unidos, [1] así como el lema del estado estadounidense de Florida [2] y, de manera no oficial, de Nicaragua, aunque la frase puede verse en la mayoría de las monedas nicaragüenses. [3]
Origins. The earliest recorded usage of the motto in English was in January 1748, when The Pennsylvania Gazette reported on the colours of Associators regiments, namely that of Benjamin Franklin 's Pennsylvania militia, one of which said: "IX. A Coronet and Plume of Feathers. Motto, In God we Trust."
Written in 1814 by Francis Scott Key (and later adopted as the U.S. national anthem on March 3, 1931 by U.S. President Herbert Hoover), the song contains an early reference to a variation of the phrase: "And this be our motto: 'In God is our trust.'" [4]
