5 de abr. de 2023 · Ten years before the fall of the Soviet Union, an 11-year-old Yelena Yemchuk and her parents lifted the Iron Curtain and fled Kyiv, Ukraine, for so-called enemy territory – “grey” Philadelphia in the United States. For security reasons, they couldn’t tell anyone they were leaving.
Yelena Yemchuk (Ukrainian: Єлена Ємчук, born April 22, 1970) is a Ukrainian photographer, painter and film director, best known for her work with The Smashing Pumpkins.
25 de abr. de 2024 · The Ukrainian-American visual artist made the pilgrimage to Krasnoilsk – a rural settlement in the west of the country – in 2019 and 2020 to photograph the celebrations observed every year on January 13 and 14 (New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day in accordance with the Julian calendar).
Yemchuk’s photographs are aesthetically appealing, even stylish at times – like her image of a young blond woman in a pink bathing suit, her head turned away from the camera. In 2015 Yemchuk took portraits of 16- and 17-year-old boys and girls in the Odesa Military Academy, which became part of her Odesa project.
14 de abr. de 2022 · Following the Russian invasion of Crimea in 2014, Yemchuk spent five years travelling to Odesa to document young people volunteering to join the army. Her upcoming photobook is a reminder of the love and lives of the young Ukrainian people now faced with war.
