Located on the junction of George Street and Castle Street, this statue of Thomas Chalmers was created by noted Edinburgh sculptor Sir John Steell (1804 – 1891). Born in Anstruther in Fife, Thomas Chalmers was a celebrated Scottish mathematician and was the leader of the Free Church of Scotland.
Thomas Chalmers FRSE (17 March 1780 – 31 May 1847), was a Scottish Presbyterian minister, professor of theology, political economist, and a leader of both the Church of Scotland and of the Free Church of Scotland.

The theologian, preacher, and philanthropist Thomas Chalmers (1780-1847) was born in Anstruther, Fife, on 17 March 1780. He was educated first at the parish school and then at St. Andrews University where he became a keen mathematician and scientist.
This stature depicts Thomas Chalmers standing, wearing long robes of Moderator of the Church. In his left arm he is holding a large open Bible across the arm. With his right hand, he is turning the pages of the bible.
