Late in the 1906 baseball season, Thompson briefly returned to the major leagues as a player for the Detroit Tigers. With starting outfielders Ty Cobb and Davy Jones out of the Tigers lineup with injuries, Thompson volunteered to fill in.

But after a near decade-long hiatus he made a comeback attempt, playing in eight games for the Detroit Tigers in 1906. Though he had been gone for nearly 10 years, his return allowed him enough time to become one of the oldest players to ever hit a triple, doing so at age 46.

He continued to play amateur baseball for the Detroit Athletic Club and in 1906 was coaxed out of retirement to play a home stand for the Detroit Tigers. Just as in Philadelphia a decade prior, Sam was part of an outfield featuring three would-be Hall of Famers.
