Sir Herbert James Gunn RA RP (30 June 1893– 30 December 1964) was a Scottish landscape and portrait painter.
Herbert James Gunn (1893–1964) Royal Academy of Arts. (b Glasgow, 30 June 1893; d London, 30 Dec. 1964). British portrait painter. Gunn enjoyed a successful career with portraits of eminent soldiers, academics, judges, and so on, painted in a solid, forthright style.
About this artwork. Glasgow-born (Herbert) James Gunn briefly studied art at Glasgow and Edinburgh before moving to the Académie Julian in Paris in 1911. Whilst in Paris, Gunn met the artist of this portrait, William Hutchison, who was to be a friend for life.

Glasgow-born artist (Herbert) James Gunn briefly studied art at Glasgow and Edinburgh before moving to the Académie Julian in Paris in 1911. After serving with the 10th Scottish Rifles in the First World War, Gunn returned to Scotland where he married twice within a decade.
