You can boost your speed by having horses (not sumpter) in your inventory even if you're not riding one. You move a lot faster after 50 athletics. Kill enemy or dealt a lot damage while on foot that how you grinding athletic skill. Use crossbow, bow or javelin on looter is recommended.

This will make your party either the default speed (hardest), 5% faster (Easy) or 10% faster (Very Easy). Experiment with the settings and find the one that suits you. If you want to move as fast as possible this setting is a must-change.

You can catch faster groups by using map to your advantage. Drive a caravan or fast lord to a corner on travel map but don't directly follow them. Instead press pause button (hotkey is number 1 by default).
With a good horse, you're generally the fastest character on the battlefield, but starting out on foot you're going to be the slowest. You have to play a lot smarter, at least until you get to high athletics levels and obtain other various movement speed perks.
