Carl (Tom Sturridge) acaba de ser expulsado del colegio, y su madre decide que pase algún tiempo con su padrino Quentin (Bill Nighy). Pero da la casualidad de que Quentin es el jefe de Radio Rock, una emisora pirata instalada en un barco en el mar del Norte, formada por un ecléctico grupo de pinchadiscos.

No existían las concesiones de emisoras y sólo la BBC emitía oficialmente.
In the ending of "The Boat That Rocked," the pirate radio station, Radio Rock, faces closure due to government pressure. The DJs and crew, led by Quentin, refuse to give up and continue broadcasting rebellious music from their ship in the North Sea.
