La historia gira en torno a un inmigrante en situación ilegal, Machete (Danny Trejo), un ex policía federal mexicano que se ha convertido en un renegado. La película comienza en México con Machete en una misión para rescatar a una muchacha que ha sido secuestrada.
Machete es también el nombre del personaje que Danny Trejo interpreta en la trilogía de Spy Kids. Además, Trejo aparece en una serie de comerciales de la marca Mountfield (tres en total) interpretando a Machete.
