Cold Mountain is about 15 miles (24 kilometers) southeast of Waynesville and 35 miles (56 kilometers) south of Asheville. It rises to 6,030 feet (1,840 m) above sea level and is the 40th tallest mountain in the eastern United States.

Cold Mountain is centrally located in the mountains of southwestern North Carolina. Its close neighbors include the Smoky and Great Balsm Mountains to the west and the crown of the Appalachians, the Black Mountain Range and Mt. Mitchell to the North East.
Explore the lush Appalachia forest, travel through rhododendron tunnels, and sit along the rocky outcroppings with stunning views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Many hikers make this a point-to-point backpacking route with a night of camping in between.
Towering just above 6,000 feet, Cold Mountain is one of the most elusive SB6K peaks, and often one of the last peaks reached by those seeking to complete the challenge. Remnants of a 1940s plane crash lie 200 feet below the summit, though it's not extremely clear how to get there.

Cold Mountain is a classic summit hike in the North Carolina Blue Ridge Mountains made infamous by the novel and movie Cold Mountain. The peak stands alone at the northern border of the Shining Rock Wilderness in Pisgah National Forest, and looks formidable from a distance.
