Frederick Denison Maurice (born Aug. 29, 1805, Normanston, Suffolk, Eng.—died April 1, 1872, London) was a major English theologian of 19th-century Anglicanism and prolific author, remembered chiefly as a founder of Christian Socialism.
Maurice became the first Principal of the Working Men's College, being replaced only on his death (by Hughes); he taught at Queen's as well. Maurice is, of course, equally important in his main subject area.
Frederick Denison Maurice, Priest and Theologian. F D Maurice was born in 1805, the son of a Unitarian clergyman. He studied civil law at Cambridge, but refused the degree in 1827 rather than declare himself an Anglican. However, he was later converted, and in 1834 was ordained to the priesthood.
