Ferdinand Magellan [a] ( c. 1480 – 27 April 1521) was a Portuguese [3] explorer best known for having planned and led the 1519–22 Spanish expedition to the East Indies, which achieved the first circumnavigation of Earth in history.

The discovery of the Strait of Magellan, in 1520, denoted one of history´s greatest milestones by enabling the first circumnavigation of the planet. Spain, mindful of the strategic importance of this new passage, arranged its colonization and defense, which turned out to be ephemeral.

Magellan was killed on the voyage in what is today the Philippines, and only 22 of the original 270 crew members made it back to Europe.
