His Piano Sonata No. 1 contains many of his distinctive hallmarks, such as the integration of well known hymns (“What a Friend we have in Jesus”) and popular songs. Joanna MacGregor responds well to Ives's quirky and vibrant idiom. Her first movement is marvellously played, particularly the glorious secondary idea (beginning at 1:35).
Jack of all trades, Joanna MacGregor is a classical, jazz and contemporary pianist. She is also a promoter, artistic director, educator, and she runs her own record label, Sound Circus.
