Singing career. In 1947, Fischer-Dieskau returned to Germany, where he launched his professional career as a singer in Badenweiler, singing in Brahms 's Ein Deutsches Requiem without any rehearsal. (He was a last-minute substitute for an indisposed singer.)

In the 1970s, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau recorded a large part of Brahms’s song oeuvre with Daniel Barenboim; the “Sapphische Ode” and “Wie Melodien zieht es” were not among the works released.
