Robert Gray (May 10, 1755 – c. July 1806) was an American merchant sea captain who is known for his achievements in connection with two trading voyages to the northern Pacific coast of North America, between 1790 and 1793, which pioneered the American maritime fur trade in that region.
Robert Gray was the first American to circumnavigate the world and the first to sail into the Columbia River in 1792. He was a fur trader, a privateer, and a mariner who played a role in the Oregon Treaty of 1846.

13 de ene. de 2003 · Gray, a Rhode Island born captain in the employ of a consortium of Boston merchants, was on his second voyage to the Northwest in search of sea otter and other furs. On his first voyage around Cape Horn and up the Pacific Coast in 1788, he had noted a strong current at the mouth of the Columbia.
