Ackman was raised in Chappaqua, New York, the son of Ronnie I. (née Posner) and Lawrence David Ackman, the former chairman of a New York real estate financing firm, Ackman-Ziff Real Estate Group. He is of Ashkenazi Jewish descent.
Larry was a member of the Advisory Board of the Pershing Square Foundation, established by his son, Bill, since its founding in 2006. He served on the Board of Directors of the New York Philharmonic (orchestra), as well as the Advisory Board of the Newman Institute, Baruch College, CUNY.
