In 2000 they signed a deal with Spikefarm Records and released their debut album Shades of... [1] with Samu Ruotsalainen on drums. The second album Angels of Distress, released in September 2001, featured Pasi Koskinen on lead vocals. Sami Uusitalo joined up in 2002 to play bass for the third album Illusion's Play.

Shape of Despair es una banda de funeral doom procedente de Helsinki, Finlandia, fundada en 1995 por Jarno Salomaa bajo el nombre de Raven, tres años más tarde cambian su nombre a Shape of Despair, y gracias a su álbum Shades of..., la banda firma contrato con Spinefarm Records.
A year later they were joined by guitarist Samuli "Skrymer" Ponsimaa, drummer Samu "Beast Dominator" Ruotsalainen, keyboardist Henri "Trollhorn" Sorvali and bassist Sami "Tundra" Uusitalo, creating the first stable line-up of the band.
While Return to the Void is the natural follow-up to Monotony Fields and represents over six years of songwriting development, the main narrative (and indeed the timely return of drummer Samu Ruotsalainen) is rooted in the past.

Marking their first new material since 2015’s Monotony Fields, and signalling the return of drummer Samu Ruotsalainen, this is an album rooted in the past, both in terms of narrative and a return toward their original sound.
