It was historically part of Cheshire and is located on the Wirral Peninsula. In the 2011 Census, the population was 13,401, which included the nearby village of Gayton. [2]

The shore is mostly sandy, with very little gradient. To the south, the shore is backed by low dunes colonised by Lyme grass and common reeds.

Birkenhead is located on the Wirral Peninsula at the mouth of the River Mersey, in the county of Merseyside, approximately 210 miles north-west of London and 16 miles north-west of Chester. The town has a population of around 91,800.
