6 de jul. de 2024 · Walpole survived the general election of 1741, but with a greatly reduced majority. His political doom was sealed in the fall of that year when the Tory and Whig sectors of the Opposition managed finally to agree on a strategy to defeat him.

This title had previously been bestowed on his uncle, the statesman Robert Walpole, and had become extinct with the death in 1797 of his youngest son, Horace Walpole of Strawberry Hill.
7 de jul. de 2024 · Sir Robert Walpole looms large in Ashworth’s study and rightly so: the book’s emphasis on the long-term significance of Walpole’s economic policies between 1721 and 1742 is admirable and will hopefully inspire a revision of Briscoe’s monograph devoted to this subject.
