8 de jul. de 2024 · The Limehouse Cut is a largely straight, broad canal in the East End of London which links the lower reaches of the Lee Navigation to the River Thames. Opening on 17 September 1770, and widened for two-way traffic by 1777, it is the oldest canal in the London area.
Hace 4 días · A former school, instituted in the hamlet of Poplar, having been dropped some years, Dr. Gloster Ridley, in the year 1737 (being then minister of the chapel there, and lecturer at Limehouse), set on foot a subscription for an united charity-school, in which poor children of both places should receive the advantages of education.
Hace 2 días · Limehouse Hole was a plying place for watermen from the seventeenth century. There were two sets of river stairs in 1687, but only those at the end of the passage that became Thames Place survived. They are prominent in John Hood's painting of Limehouse Reach in 1768 (Plate 146b).
9 de jul. de 2024 · The Limehouse group, which survives, was completed without extra cost by October 1819. It was designated Colquhoun Place in honour of Patrick Colquhoun, whose Marine Police were the inspiration behind the dock company's private police force.
