A motion for reprieve was defeated (380 to 310), and one to submit the verdict to a national referendum was rejected (425 to 286).

On June 17 they proclaimed that they were not simply the Third Estate of the Estates-General but a National Assembly (Assemblée Nationale), which the other deputies were invited to join.
