He has appeared on 80 albums with a variety of other notable musicians—including Duke Ellington, Sonny Rollins, Dizzy Gillespie, Roberta Flack and Lonnie Liston Smith. His namesake group Mtume had several No. 1 hits on the Billboard charts.
