Alfred Sisley (October 30, 1839 - January 29, 1899) was a French impressionist painter who straddled British and French national identification. Although he received far less praise than some of his contemporaries, he was one of the key artists who began the French impressionist movement.
Alfred Sisley was born in Paris, the son of affluent British expatriates. His mother, Felicia Sell, was a music connoisseur, and his father, William Sisley, owned a lucrative business exporting artificial flowers and silk. Felicia and William were cousins, descended from a long line of English smugglers and tradesmen.
Topography: This landscape, with nothing architectural to distinguish it, was titled Une route près de Louveciennes when it was first exhibited in 1927 and by François Daulte, author of the 1959 Sisley catalogue raisonné. Based on style, he assigned the canvas to 1879. Sisley was living at the time in busy suburban Sèvres, having left the country village of Louveciennes two years earlier.

Según los historiadores de arte, fue el más consistente de todos los impresionistas en su dedicación a la pintura al aire libre («au plein air»).Hijo de una acomodada familia británica, pasó la mayor parte de su vida en Francia aunque conservó su ciudadanía de origen.
