Melvins (sometimes the Melvins) are an American rock band formed in 1983 [1] in Montesano, Washington. Their early work was key to the development of both grunge and sludge metal. [2] Primarily a trio, they have also performed as a quartet, with either two drummers or two bassists.
The Melvins are highly regarded as a huge influence upon the sludge and drone genres. The band's genre fluctuates from release to release, playing grunge, stoner rock, sludge, drone, hardcore influenced rock, or experimental pieces.
