He was the first of three children of the German émigré, Francis Hueffer (1845-89), a musicologist and author, and Catherine (1850-1927), painter, daughter of Ford Madox Brown, and his second wife Matilda (‘Emma’) Hill. He was christened Ford Hermann Hueffer.
