He had previously led the major National Antarctic Expedition (1901–04) during which he reached a record 82º11’ South, and a great many scientific and geographical discoveries were made.

There was a tradition of seafaring on both his mothers and fathers sides of the family and he first went to sea at the age of 13 years old. He learnt his trade well and progressed through the ranks of the Royal Navy.
