Simon Vouet war einer der ersten französischen Maler, die zu einem längeren Aufenthalt nach Italien gingen und dort eine gründliche malerische Ausbildung erhielten. Seine stilistische Entwicklung ist extrem weit gespannt und reicht vom Tenebrismus der Caravaggisten in seinem italienischen Frühwerk bis hin zu einem klassizistischen Spätstil.
