Északról és keletről a Duna, nyugatról Noricum – kezdetben kelta királyság, majd római provincia – határolta, déli határa a Száva folyótól mintegy 30–50 kilométernyire délre húzódott. Nyugati határa a Borostyánkő út védelmi igénye miatt idővel nyugatabbra tolódott és így állandósult.
