Trabajando a espátula una materia espesa, Courbet logra, de hecho, dar una impresión de eternidad. Construye su cuadro en tres líneas horizontales: la orilla en la que descansan dos barcas, los oleajes tratados en una gama verde oscuro, realzada con el blanco de la espuma, y el cielo cubierto de nubes.

Courbet painted this view looking out over the English Channel during a visit to Étretat along the coast of Normandy in August 1869. The ocean has receded at low tide, and two small boats are left on the shore.

The spectacular cliffs at Étretat culminate in a dramatic sea-arch with a needle of rock beyond. Courbet visited in the summer of 1869 and in a month completed five views of the cliffs and numerous seascapes. He worked quickly, painting out of doors.
