Mwandishi is the ninth album by jazz pianist Herbie Hancock, released in 1971. It is the first album to officially feature Hancock’s ‘Mwandishi’ sextet consisting of saxophonist Bennie Maupin, trumpeter Eddie Henderson, trombonist Julian Priester, bassist Buster Williams and drummer Billy Hart.
Fat Albert Rotunda is the eighth album by jazz keyboardist Herbie Hancock, released in 1969. It was Hancock's first release for Warner Bros. Records after his departure from Blue Note Records.

His Maiden Voyage, a street-smart use of scales and modes, began life as a cologne advert for American TV while his Fat Albert Rotunda was a whole lot funkier. Mwandishi, though, was something else. In 1971 Time magazine voted it among the ten best albums of 1971, while Rolling Stone called it “a session of driving firebrand improvisations.”
The collection basically comprises three records: Fat Albert Rotunda, Mwandishi, and Crossings. The Fat Albert record (which preceded the Mwandishi album by two years) is super fun, funky, upbeat grooves and 70s swagger.

This Warner collection isn't a bad introduction to the music of Herbie Hancock. You get the fun grooves of Fat Albert, plus the African space orchestra odysseys of the Sextet. That combination of intellectual challenge with warm human emotion pretty much sums up Herbie's amazing music and career.
