  4. Medications implicated in AP are classified based on the strength of evidence into one of three classes of drugs associated with pancreatitis. We reviewed the top 100 prescription medications in the United States for their association with AP.

  5. Only 3 drugs had evidence as causing acute pancreatitis from randomized controlled clinical trials, including 6-mercaptopurine and azathioprine (class 1). Only 14 drugs were shown from case-control trials or pharmacoepidemiologic studies as causing acute pancreatitis (class 2).
