Muuratsalo Experimental House, the summer home of Alvar and Elissa Aalto, is situated on the western shore of the island of Muuratsalo, in lake Päijänne. Within the grounds of the Experimental House are the house itself, a woodshed and a smoke sauna. The rocky site measures 53650 m2.
One of the more modest but original and elegant villas designed by Alvar Aalto. The Aalto House is expected two years before the Villa Mairea, a luxury residence where the creativity of Aalto was able to get into full swing.
The Aalto House was in residential use until architect Elissa Aalto’s death in 1994, when it came into the custodianship of the Alvar Aalto Foundation. The house was renovated in 2000-2002. Today The Aalto House serves as museum and is a member of The Iconic House organization.
