as u/oscar-p-k mentioned, he really leans into low harmonic-rich sounds. dampened drums, big cymbals. you can hit them differently, they have a totally different envelope than super live, high-frequency rich drums and cymbals. spend some time with some of those dead, low sounds and you'll get there.
