Hohenheim was crying in his family photo because he had to leave to do all the world saving business, but Ed is smiling in his as he got to do what his dad couldn't - live out the rest of his life with his family.
Its really satisfying to see Hohenheim finally smile as hes reunited with his beloved wife and his suffering finally ending. His death is one of few anime scenes to get me every time. “Well old friend, at least you died with a smile on your face.”.
Edward also becomes something of the best version of Hohenheim at the end. He's wearing Hohenheim's coat and carrying his briefcase in the final scene, with his hair in the same style, and in the last family photo he's where Hohenheim was, but smiling instead of crying.
