Major-General Sir Richard Hannay, KCB, OBE, DSO, is a fictional character created by Scottish novelist John Buchan and further made popular by the 1935 Alfred Hitchcock film The 39 Steps (and other later film adaptations), very loosely based on Buchan's 1915 novel of the same name.
In The Thirty-Nine Steps, Buchan holds up Richard Hannay as an example to his readers of an ordinary man who puts his country's interests before his own safety. The story was a great success with the men in the First World War trenches .

Adventurer Richard Hannay, just returned from South Africa, is thoroughly bored with London life—until he is accosted by a mysterious American, who warns him of an assassination plot that could completely destabalise the fragile political balance of Europe.
Synopsis. Canadian Richard Hanney is visiting London when he meets a mysterious spy named Annabella Smith. When Smith is murdered in his apartment, Hannay is forced to go on the run from both the police and the foreign spies who killed her. Heading north to Scotland, Hannay is seemingly betrayed at every opportunity.
