On lap 11 out of the planned 200, a fifteen-car accident occurred between turns one and two in which Wheldon was involved. The accident began when James Hinchcliffe was clipped by Wade Cunningham . Cunningham and J. R. Hildebrand then collided when Cunningham swerved and Hildebrand drove over the rear of his car.
