Thomas Hagen is a fictional character in Mario Puzo's 1969 novel The Godfather and Francis Ford Coppola's films The Godfather (1972) and The Godfather Part II (1974). He is portrayed by Robert Duvall in the films.

Born in San Diego, California, Robert Duvall's first film appearance was To Kill a Mockingbird in 1962. He achieved two Academy Award nominations, both of which while for working with Francis Ford Coppola, director of The Godfather. Duvall appeared as Tom Hagen in The Godfather, where he helped Coppola get Al Pacino to star as Michael Corleone.
From the start of production, Coppola wanted Robert Duvall to play the part of Tom Hagen. After screen testing several other actors, Coppola eventually got his wish and Duvall was awarded the part.
