The Nightingales are a secret inner circle within the Thieves Guild, based in Nightingale Hall. The most recent incarnation of the faction was made up of three elite thieves: Mercer Frey, Karliah, and Gallus Desidenius. The Nightingales exist to protect the shrines of Nocturnal throughout Skyrim.
The Nightingale Trinity, usually called simply the Nightingales, are a trio of highly skilled thieves dedicated to the service of Nocturnal. Members are typically chosen from the higher echelons of the Thieves Guild.
Agent of Nocturnal. Becoming an Agent of Nocturnal is the reward for completing the quest Darkness Returns. After returning the Skeleton Key to the Ebonmere in the Twilight Sepulcher, the Dragonborn may choose one of three roles: Agent of Stealth, Agent of Subterfuge or Agent of Strife.
As a member of the trinity of Nightingales, it is incumbent upon us to recover the Skeleton Key if it strays from the Twilight Sepulcher. Why Nocturnal allows the Key to be stolen in the first place is a mystery.
The Nightingales are the elite protectors of the Shrine of Nocturnal. In exchange for being given blessings by Nocturnal, they are bound to protect the Shrine in life as well as in death, until their debts to Nocturnal are paid.
The Nightingales are a small secretive internal sect of the Thieves Guild, whose primary purpose is to protect the Twilight Sepulcher, the primary shrine of the Daedric Prince Nocturnal. It also serves as a secondary shrine to Nocturnal for the Nightingales.
